What to Do With an Extra Room

Making the most of your extra room — or flex space — can be an important way to fulfill a hobby, educational goal, remote work requirement, or family fun experience. Whether is a home theater, a playroom, or an office, homeowners who are lucky enough to have an extra room have a variety of choices when it comes to deciding what to do with it.

Rooms can serve more than one purpose. A home office can also have a daybed and serve as a guest room for visitors. A kid’s playroom can also be their home school classroom with the right functional furniture and organizational system. An extra family room could house both a bar set up for the adults and a game room for the kids.

What to do with a tiny space? A tiny nursery — babies don’t need much when they get started, and a large closet or landing can be a nursery starter. Or set up your favorite art or crafting supplies, organized carefully, with a desk or small table.

What if you have a larger space? Organize a room around a grand piano. Use the room for listening to music either live or on records. Set up a reading nook in a corner or window seat. Create a home gym room with small weights, space for a yoga mat, and a large wall mirror. Or if you have teens, turn this room into a place where they can hang out with their friends.
